The UCS campaign is tougher, and while it’s full of melodrama and some amusingly Western names (it’s not often you find a character in a strategy RPG called Kevin, let’s be honest), it’s great to have the full story here after the UCS campaign was previously added to the re-released PlayStation and DS versions.
What follows is a journey to get to the bottom of what happened to Karen across a pair of campaigns, with one for each faction. The Oceania Cooperative Union (OCU) and the Unified Continental States (UCS) share a single land border on Huffman Island, and while investigating a UCS base, our protagonist Royd - yes, Royd - watches as his fiancee’s mech (known in the Front Mission universe as Panzer’s) is blown to smithereens. This first Front Mission title kicks off in the year 2090, and wouldn’t you know it, there’s conflict brewing. Today’s the day, and I can start at the beginning. It’s enough that I bookmarked the game in my brain and planned to one day circle around back to it. I don’t remember why I didn’t try it for myself because I recall it looking cool. My previous experience with it was watching my roommate fall in love with Front Mission 4.
It worked for Yakuza, right? This is actually my first chance to really delve into the series. With dozens of characters to meet, its mature story, and non-Manichean protagonists The fact that we’re getting not one but three remakes (one of them having never been localized) gives me hope that we’ll see more of the series over here. We missed a slew of them and only received three out of the five “numbered” titles. It hasn’t been completely absent, but our coverage has been spotty. I’m happy to see the Front Mission series finally getting some love over here in North America. With dozens of characters to meet, a well-thought-out story, and no-good-or-evil protagonists, Front Mission is the classic of the Japanese strategy RPG genre – now available worldwide.
